Population and female-heads of households: A total of 19,464 people (9683 male and 9781 female) live in the villages covered in this study. Table below provides gender-disaggregated number of population by district by province. Number of total population is highest in Phnom Srok district of Bantey Meanchey province followed by Bovel district of Battambang province, Thmar Prok district of Bantey Meanchey province, Angkor Thom district and Soutr Nikum district of Siem Reap province, and Rattanak Mondul district of Battambang province. Table 3.1 also reveals that the proportion of women in the villages is higher than men (except Bovel district of Battambang province and Soutr Nikum district of Siem Reap province).

On average, women head 9.17% households in these villages. Women who are primarily responsible for household breadwinning are considered as female-head of household in this study. The percentage of female-headed-household includes both de jure (De jure female head of household is the one who becomes head of household because of divorce, widowhood or separation) and de factor (the facto female head of household in the one who becomes head of household because of the situation like husband’s migration and disability of husband) female-headed-households. This indicates that the percentage of female-headed-households in the villages of this study is much lower than the national average (23.5%). Table below provides percentage of -headed-households by district and province.

Respondents of different age groups participated in the group discussions of this study. The reason of selection of women of different age groups was to explore differentiated needs, interests and statuses of women in the target areas. But more attention was given to women of younger age in the selection for participation in the group discussion. It was difficult to bring higher proportion of younger women in Banteay Meanchey province in the group discussion. This is because younger women are more migratory to the nearby Thai border for cash income.
